A few years ago, my husband and I chose to move our family to Michigan. This move was a difficult decision, but we felt God calling us. The move was especially hard on our 5-year-old son Ryan as he struggled with change and leaving his grandparents who played an active role in our lives babysitting, family nights and holidays. Most of the time, at the beginning of the school year, mentors seek advice from their students’ teachers about how to use the time with their student in positive ways. In the case of Mike and Trevin, the teacher suggested reading a chapter book together, because it seemed like Trevin’s love of reading was lagging this fall.

Cameron was in third grade this year. He really struggled in class – with focusing and following directions. When his mentor, Amy, came to his school every Thursday, he would run ahead of her to the cafeteria, leaving her to walk the hallway alone. He would quickly grab his lunch and race to the library, again leaving her to catch up. Once they sat down in the library, he would rush through his lunch and throw it in the trash, eager to go outside. Amy frequently followed along behind. She would often wonder if Cameron wanted her there at all.

As a Kids Hope USA Director, I have seen mentors dig in, see the students and staff, and want to be supportive. I also have seen people grow in their ability to get out of their own bubble and dive into the needs of our community.
